Reverse with Geelong despatch (Nov 12), Melbourne transit and SHIP LETTER - INWARDS FREE diamond datestamp in red. Minor soiling, otherwise fine and an attractive maritime cover.

1866, Treaty Ports: Shanghai, United Kingdom entire letter from London to Shanghai, cancelled 'Lombard Street / F.O./ Paid / MAR/10/66' cds. in red, endorsed "via Marseilles" on top left. For Late Fee only 1 d. red cancelled and 1/4 d. prepaid in cash by red crayon. Sent via “Care of Messrs. John Burd & Co., Hong Kong”. File fold at bottom, otherwise fine and an unusual entire. The addressee, John Anderson Esq. Mess. W.R. Adamson Co. Shanghai, formed his firm, exporting tea, silk and general merchandise in 1858 in Shanghai and became Chinas greatest export company for tea and silk. In PROFI archive no other forwarding agent covers John Burd Co. to Shanghai recorded.

The left 1 a. with minor rubbed spot, otherwise very fine and fresh. An outstanding 1st issue rarity; one of the finest recorded 4 anna 3rd printing multiples on cover and truly exceptional. 1854, 4th Printing 4 a. red & blue, 8 singles, cut to shape, tied by diamond "1" with adjacend red "BOMBAY B.P.P." to opened out quadruple rate cover to the 'Medical Superintendent' in Aden, with clearly struck "BOMBAY AUG. 29"(1856) despatch mark on reverse, also Aden arrival mark. Slightly opened at left on arrival, with minor wear and a few small toned spots, not detracting from the fine and fresh appearance of this rare quadruple-rate franking. An outstanding and impressive entire to a rare destination. Ex Frenkle, 'Kohinoor', Heddergott, and Dr. Kornan. (Estimate 25-35.000€)
